Assam BJP Strengthens as Two Congress Working Presidents Defect

Guwahati, 29th February: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma heralded a significant moment for the Assam BJP as two prominent working presidents of the Congress Party, Rana Goswami and Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, officially joined the BJP ranks. Speaking to the media in Guwahati, Sarma emphasized the significance of these defections and hinted at more defections in the days ahead.

Rana Goswami, formerly a secretary of the All India Congress Committee known for his close ties with the UP team under Priyanka Gandhi, resigned from the Congress Party to align with the BJP. Similarly, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, another working president of the Congress Party, pledged unwavering support to the BJP-led government both inside and outside the Assembly.

“These defections hold immense importance for us,” asserted Chief Minister Sarma, expressing confidence in the burgeoning strength of the BJP in Assam.

The Assam BJP’s parliamentary board is slated to address these developments promptly, offering clarity on the roles and responsibilities of the newly joined members. Chief Minister Sarma indicated forthcoming decisions, noting ongoing discussions with state leadership counterparts in Manipur, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh.

Reflecting on recent political dynamics, Sarma attributed a decline in Congress’s standing in Assam to Rahul Gandhi’s visit during a sensitive time, particularly coinciding with the Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha ceremony.

Amidst political shifts, attention also turned to economic development with the announcement of the largest private investment in the North East region. A semiconductor plant valued at Rs 27,000 crore was formalized at Jagiroad, marking a monumental occasion for Assam’s economic trajectory. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union MoS Rajeev Chandrasekhar, and leaders from Tata Group were commended for their contributions in realizing this historic investment.
