Assam: Bodo Language Exclusion Sparks Statewide Outcry

Guwahati: The All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) today launched a series of powerful demonstrations across Assam, vehemently protesting the conspicuous absence of the Bodo language from the Assam Judicial Service examinations. The student body minced no words in condemning both the Assam Government and the Gauhati High Court, accusing them of a blatant disregard for a language officially recognised under the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

A significant protest erupted on Kokrajhar’s JD Road, where agitated demonstrators symbolically incinerated copies of the Assam Judicial Service recruitment advertisement. ABSU leaders, addressing the media, asserted that this exclusion was yet another instance of authorities sidelining Bodo, despite its standing as an associate official language of Assam.

Speaking passionately to reporters, ABSU Assistant General Secretary Swmdwn Brahma articulated the student body’s unequivocal demand: the immediate inclusion of the Bodo language in all pertinent competitive examinations. Brahma specifically highlighted the necessity for the 50-mark paper in the Grade III Assam Judicial Service examination to be offered in Bodo, on par with Assamese.

Furthermore, ABSU urged that the 20-mark language paper for the Junior Administrative Assistant post in district courts, which falls under the Assam Administrative Service and is overseen by the Gauhati High Court, also be made available in Bodo.

“This is not merely about language—it is about fundamental rights and equal access,” Brahma emphasised. He further stated, “Systematically denying Bodo medium candidates the chance to write exams in their own language is an outright exclusionary practice.”

The organisation underscored that despite relentless representations and numerous appeals to both the state government and the judicial authorities over several years, no tangible steps have been taken to address this pressing concern.

ABSU has firmly pledged to intensify and sustain its movement until the Bodo language is accorded its rightful and due position in the state’s competitive recruitment processes.
