Assam: Bodoland Celebrates Dr. Bhupen Hazarika with Life-Sized Statue Unveiling in Kokrajhar
Kokrajhar — In a heartfelt tribute to the legendary musician and cultural icon Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTC), Pramod Boro, unveiled a life-sized statue on November 5, coinciding with the 13th anniversary of Hazarika’s passing.
The statue, measuring an impressive 10 feet 6 inches, stands as a testament to Dr. Hazarika’s indelible impact on Assamese and Indian music, culture, and society.
The unveiling ceremony, organized by the Bhupen Hazarika Memorial Committee, drew a significant crowd, including local leaders, cultural figures, and members of the public, all eager to honor the musical maestro.
During his address, Pramod Boro announced the ambitious plan to construct a dedicated Bhupen Hazarika building in Jalahat, Baksa District, with an investment of 10 crore rupees. This facility is expected to serve as a hub for promoting Hazarika’s enduring legacy and cultural contributions.
Boro further revealed a noteworthy initiative to translate 200 of Dr. Hazarika’s iconic songs into the Bodo language. This translation project will be undertaken by the Assamese and Bodo departments of Bodoland University, aiming to broaden the accessibility of Hazarika’s work to a wider audience within the region.
The event also saw the release of a commemorative publication titled “Bhupendra Baibhav,” a memorial booklet celebrating the life and works of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, which was unveiled to much applause.
Among the distinguished guests present at the ceremony were Kuladhar Saikia, former President of the Assam Sahitya Sabha; Dr. Surath Narzary, President of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha; Assam’s Cabinet Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma; MP Jayanta Basumatary; and MLA Lawrence Islary, among others.
The highlight of the ceremony was a stirring musical performance of Hazarika’s beloved song “Manuhe Manuhor Babe,” rendered in the Bodo language, symbolizing the cultural unity between the Bodo and Assamese communities.
Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, revered as the “Uncrowned King of Assamese Music,” is celebrated not only for his extraordinary contributions as a singer and composer but also for his impactful role as a social activist and cultural ambassador of Assam. His songs, which traverse multiple languages including Assamese and Hindi, continue to resonate and inspire generations, solidifying his legacy in the hearts of many.
