Assam Braces for Deluge: IMD Forecasts Extremely Heavy Rains

Guwahati, Assam: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a stern warning, predicting extremely heavy rainfall across Assam over the next two to three days. The alert comes as a well-marked low-pressure area over the Northwest Bay of Bengal, off the Odisha coast, is poised to intensify into a depression within 24 hours, threatening widespread disruption to life and property in the state.

The cyclonic circulation linked to this developing weather system, extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, is expected to unleash a torrent of heavy to extremely heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. Districts particularly vulnerable to this meteorological onslaught include Kamrup (Metro), Kamrup, Cachar, Hailakandi, Dhubri, Goalpara, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, and Chirang, among others.

In the state’s capital, Guwahati, continuous downpours are already sparking fears of extensive waterlogging, severe traffic snarls, and isolated landslides. City authorities have sprung into action, elevating their alert levels, activating emergency response teams, and meticulously monitoring the urban drainage infrastructure to mitigate the impending crisis.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has promptly issued an advisory, urging citizens to exercise extreme caution. Residents are strongly advised to remain indoors during periods of intense rainfall, steer clear of low-lying areas and known landslide-prone zones, and diligently follow official weather bulletins for the latest updates. “We urge the public, especially in Guwahati, to take necessary precautions and avoid unnecessary travel during this period,” an ASDMA spokesperson emphasised, highlighting the gravity of the situation. Residents in flood-prone areas are particularly advised to prepare for potential emergencies and strictly adhere to advisories issued by their local authorities. The ASDMA has assured the public of continuous updates to ensure public safety as the weather situation unfolds.
