Assam Braces for Intense Final Phase of Lok Sabha Elections: Chief Minister Leads Massive Rally
Guwahati, 5th May: Assam is gearing up for an electrifying climax to the Lok Sabha elections as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma spearheads a grand motorcycle rally in Guwahati on the eve of the final day of campaigning.
Scheduled for May 7, the last phase will witness polling in the pivotal constituencies of Guwahati, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, and Dhubri, boasting a competitive field of 47 candidates. With over 81 lakh voters expected to cast their ballots, the stakes couldn’t be higher.
The ruling BJP and its regional allies are poised for a fierce contest, with a strategic focus on reclaiming parliamentary representation for indigenous and majority communities. The 2023 delimitation exercise is believed to have bolstered their prospects.
In the keenly watched Guwahati seat, BJP’s fresh face Bijuli Kalita Medhi, serving as the vice president of the state unit, braces for a head-to-head battle against Congress newcomer Mira Barthakur Goswami, also the president of the Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress.
Of the 11 seats contested by the BJP, two have been allocated to key ally AGP, while UPPL secures one. The remainder of the 10 seats saw elections in the initial phases.
Assam witnessed robust voter participation in the earlier phases, recording a turnout of 77.35% in the second phase on April 26 and 78.25% in the first phase on April 19.
As the final phase unfolds, Assam nears the culmination of its voting journey for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, with the stage set for the eagerly awaited results announcement on June 4.
