Assam: Brutal Murder of College Student Ends in Death Sentence for Convict

Guwahati: In a verdict that brings closure to a four-year-long pursuit of justice, the Dhemaji District and Sessions Court on Thursday sentenced Rintu Sharma to death for the cold-blooded murder of college student Nandita Saikia.

The tragic incident, which shook the community on August 21, 2021, saw Nandita, a student of Moridhal College, lose her life in a vicious attack that also left her classmate, Kashmina Dutta, and Kashmina’s father, Deba Dutta, with grave injuries.

The court, after an exhaustive trial and hearing from 41 witnesses, found Sharma guilty of the heinous crime. The case, registered as Dhemaji Police Station Case No. 397/2021, saw police file a comprehensive 400-page chargesheet against the accused.

After a meticulous review of the evidence and testimonies, the Sessions Court held Sharma accountable under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 302 for murder, 307 for attempted murder, 326 for causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons, and 342 for wrongful confinement.

The pronouncement of the death penalty brings a sense of finality to the long and painful ordeal for the victims’ families and the wider community that had been closely following the case.
