Assam: BTC CEM Pramod Boro Lays Foundation for Memorial Honouring Bodoland’s First Martyr Sujit Narzary
Guwahati: In a heartfelt tribute to the legacy of Bodoland’s first martyr, Sujit Narzary, the Chief Executive Member of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), Pramod Boro, laid the foundation stone for a statue and memorial park at Bathipara in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Saturday.
The memorial, with a sanctioned budget of Rs 2.80 crore, is poised to stand as a lasting symbol of Narzary’s sacrifice and his foundational role in the Bodoland movement.
The initiative, launched under the BTC government’s vision, seeks to preserve the memory of those who played a defining role in the decades-long struggle for Bodoland. Designed as both a tribute and a site of collective remembrance, the memorial will honour not just Sujit Narzary’s life, but also the spirit and resilience of the Bodo people.
Terming the occasion a milestone in Bodoland’s journey of recognising its heroes, CEM Pramod Boro remarked, “The spirit of Sujit Narzary lives on in every Bodo heart. This memorial will inspire generations to remember the roots of our struggle.” His words resonated deeply with the community, for whom Narzary remains an enduring symbol of courage, sacrifice, and hope.
The foundation-laying event saw participation from key community figures and leaders, including Ramio P. Narzary, Executive Member of the Bodo Kachari Welfare Development Council (BKWD), and Khwrwmdao Wary, Vice President of the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU), among others. Their presence underscored the shared commitment to preserving the movement’s legacy and fostering unity and pride among future generations.
Sujit Narzary, revered as the first martyr of the Bodoland movement, laid down his life in the early days of the Bodo people’s quest for identity, recognition, and autonomy. The memorial park in Bathipara aims to be more than a structure—it is envisioned as a living monument of remembrance, reflection, and inspiration for the entire Bodoland Territorial Region.
