Assam: BTR Representatives Meet Union Home Minister to Hasten Bodo Accord Implementation

Guwahati 2nd March: Representatives from the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) in Assam convened with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday, focusing on the expeditious execution of the Bodo Accord’s provisions. The meeting took place at the Union Home Minister’s official residence in New Delhi.

Key figures in attendance included the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), Pramod Boro, and the President of All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU), Dipen Boro.

The delegation engaged in discussions with Amit Shah regarding the prompt implementation of the Bodo Accord and advocated on behalf of Bodo individuals residing outside the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district.

The initial Bodo Treaty, inked in 1993 with the All Bodo Students’ Union, laid the groundwork for the establishment of the Bodoland Autonomous Council, albeit with limited political authority. Subsequently, a second Bodo Accord was reached in 2003, resulting in the formation of a self-governing body for Bodo territories in Assam, known as the Bodoland Territorial Council, which wielded expanded financial and administrative powers.

The third Bodo Accord, endorsed in 2020, rebranded the Bodoland Territorial Autonomous District (BTAD) as the BTR, pledging enhanced legislative, executive, and administrative autonomy under the sixth schedule and facilitating the expansion of BTC territory.

Furthermore, the agreement encompassed provisions for the Bodo populace residing beyond the BTR in Assam, as well as incorporated villages with a predominant Bodo demographic situated outside the BTAD region into the BTR.
