Assam: Businessman Allegedly Commits Suicide Over Debt Dispute in Jorhat

Guwahati, 7th February: A debt-ridden businessman allegedly committed suicide by hanging at his shop in the Tarajan locality of Assam’s Jorhat on Tuesday.

The deceased, identified as Kishore Kumar Borthakur, hailed from Khowang in Dibrugarh district.

According to reports, Kishore had borrowed Rs 80,000 from Nabajit due to financial difficulties; however, days later, Nabajit and his wife visited Kishore’s home demanding repayment.

Despite Kishore’s claim of borrowing only Rs 15,000 for shop supplies, Nabajit insisted on the larger sum and threatened legal action if not repaid.

The situation escalated when Kishore failed to open his shop on Tuesday, prompting his wife to search for him. She tragically discovered his lifeless body inside the shop, prompting her to inform the police.

A team from the Jorhat police arrived at the scene, recovered the body, and initiated the necessary procedures for post-mortem examination.

The incident highlights the devastating impact of financial strain and underscores the need for timely support for individuals facing debt-related challenges.
