Assam By-Polls: Election Commission warns CM
Guwahati: The Election Commission of India has warned Assam’s Chief Minister and the senior leader of Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) Himanta Biswa Sarma for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct during the election campaign for the assembly polls in the state.
“The Commission issues warning to him (Sarma) and cautions him to be more careful and exercise restraint in future and strictly follow the provision of Model Code of Conduct, while making public utterances,” said notice by EC secretary N T Bhutia.
The ECI notice was issued on October 25 based on complaints lodged by Assam Congress leaders Bhupen Kumar Borah and Debabrata Saikia.
The complaint read that in the capacity of Chief Minister, Sarma had made several announcements at various election meetings held in Bhawanipur, Mariani, and Thowra constituencies which is against the Model of Code of Conduct.
It may be mentioned that CM Sarma, on the other hand, has tendered the Election Commission an “unconditional apology” “in case of any advertent commission of any provision of the Model Code of Conduct.”
