Assam Cabinet Approves Development Council for ‘Maimal’ Community and Other Key Initiatives

Guwahati, 11th March: In a significant move aimed at fostering inclusivity and addressing community-specific needs, the Assam Cabinet, led by Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, granted approval for the establishment of a development council for the ‘Maimal’ community in the Barak valley. The decision comes in response to longstanding demands from the community and is in line with similar councils formed for other groups.

The ‘Maimal’ community, also known as the Kiran Sheikh community, predominantly comprises fishermen and traces its roots to the efforts of the Sufi saint, Shah Jalal, and his disciples. Situated along the banks of the Sonai and Barak rivers, primarily in Assam’s Barak Valley districts, with some presence in Sylhet District, the community derives its name from the Persian word “māhi” meaning fish and the Arabic word “mallāḥ” meaning boatman.

In another significant decision, the cabinet approved the use of the Meitei script for primary level education in the Manipuri language across schools, reflecting the government’s commitment to linguistic diversity and cultural preservation.

Furthermore, Baruah announced that the Prime Minister is scheduled to lay the foundation for a semiconductor unit at Jagiroad on March 13, virtually, signaling a major stride in the state’s industrial development. The Industry, Commerce, and Public Enterprise Department have been entrusted with expediting necessary clearances and approvals for the establishment of this unit by the Tata Group.

In a flurry of developmental initiatives, the cabinet sanctioned administrative funds for various projects, including a water supply scheme in Jorhat town, the construction of Karimganj Medical College, the beautification of the historic Rang Ghar, and the Amingaon sports complex.

Additionally, the cabinet extended its sovereign guarantee to the bank for the establishment of 1,000-MW solar plants in the state, underlining its commitment to sustainable energy initiatives and infrastructural development.
