Assam Cabinet Approves Operationalization of 39 Sub-Districts to Enhance Grassroots Governance
Guwahati, September 5, 2024 — In a significant move to bolster grassroots governance, the Assam Cabinet has approved the operationalization of 39 sub-districts across the state. The first phase of this initiative will take place between October 2 and October 8, 2024, marking a step toward more efficient, citizen-centric administration.
The approved sub-districts include key areas in districts like Kamrup Metro, Darrang, Morigaon, Sonitpur, Dibrugarh, and several others, ensuring comprehensive coverage across Assam. Each sub-district will be led by an Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) and supported by two Assistant Commissioners, with headquarters strategically located for better accessibility.
Notable sub-districts include Dispur, Demoria, and North Guwahati in Kamrup Metro; Sipajhar and Dalgaon in Darrang; Jagiroad and Lahorighat in Morigaon; and key regions in districts like Lakhimpur, Dhubri, Tinsukia, and Sivasagar, among others. This move also includes the creation of a new Circle and sub-district in Behali.
The initiative is expected to streamline administrative operations at the local level, providing citizens with more direct access to governance and services. The Cabinet’s decision to finalize the headquarters for these sub-districts will further ensure that they are centrally located for the convenience of residents.
This effort aligns with the Assam government’s broader objective of improving administrative efficiency and promoting local development.
