Assam Cabinet Expansion: Four New Ministers Announced

Assam: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the names of four new ministers who will be included in his cabinet.

The new ministers are Prasanta Phookan, Kaushik Rai, Krishnendu Paul, and Rupesh Goala. This move is part of the Assam government’s efforts to expand its cabinet and address the strain on current ministers.

The cabinet expansion aims to improve regional representation and streamline governance ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.

Currently, the Assam cabinet has 15 members, including the Chief Minister, despite having the capacity for 18 members. This leaves three vacant positions open for appointments.

A key concern has been the lack of representation from Barak Valley since the resignation of former minister Parimal Suklabaidya. His absence has left the region without a voice in the state cabinet, prompting demands for inclusivity. The announcement has fueled speculation about new appointments, with expectations of at least one representative from Barak Valley to restore balance in the cabinet.

The reshuffle is seen as a strategic move to ensure effective administration while addressing regional aspirations in the run-up to the assembly polls.
