Guwahati, 24th February: In a significant stride towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the Assam Government has announced the repeal of the Assam Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act, 1935.

Cabinet minister Jayanta Mallabaruah made the announcement following the weekly cabinet meeting held in Guwahati.

Under this decision, Muslim marriages and divorces will now be governed by the Special Marriages Act, transferring the authority from 94 Muslim marriage registrars to District Commissioners or District Registrars.

Additionally, the government has allocated a one-time compensation of Rs 2 lakh to each registrar.

Furthermore, the cabinet approved the inclusion of Mising, Rabha, Tiwa, Karbi, Dimasa, and Deori languages as mediums of instruction at the foundational level of primary schools.

This strategic move aims to elevate the importance of mother tongues in education and contribute to their promotion and preservation.

In another development, the Assam government designated the Ahom, Koch Rajbongshi, and Gorkha communities within the Balipara Tribal Belt as a protected class. Additionally, Manipuri has been endorsed as the Associate official language for four districts: Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, and Hojai.

Moreover, the government unveiled plans to establish the Assam Veterinary and Fishery University by splitting the Assam Agriculture University, marking another pivotal decision towards enhancing veterinary and fishery education in the region.

Jayanta Mallabaruah emphasized the importance of these measures during the press briefing, highlighting their collective significance in driving socio-cultural reforms and educational advancements in Assam.
