Assam: Cachar District Under Restrictions Amid WAQF Act Protest Concerns

Guwahati: In response to escalating tensions and a perceived threat to public order stemming from ongoing protests against the WAQF Act, the District Magistrate of Cachar has invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), imposing restrictions across the entire district.

The directive, formalized through an official order issued on April 13th by District Magistrate Mridul Yadav, IAS, follows a report submitted by the Superintendent of Police, Cachar. The police report conveyed significant concerns regarding the potential for a disruption of peace and tranquility within the district.

The order explicitly states the necessity for immediate preventive action to safeguard public peace, ensure the safety of citizens, and maintain overall tranquility in the region. The imposed restrictions are intended to preempt any potential escalation of the current situation.

The official order explicitly mentions, “In view of the recent protests against the WAQF Act and the possibility of law and order disturbances, restrictions are being imposed throughout the Cachar district until further notice.” The duration of these restrictions remains unspecified, pending further assessment of the situation.

The district administration has issued an appeal to the public, urging all residents to maintain calm and extend their cooperation to the authorities as the imposed restrictions remain in effect. Additional information concerning the specific nature and extent of these restrictions is anticipated to be released by the district authorities in due course.

Law enforcement agencies within Cachar district have been placed on high alert, and security protocols are being intensified across the region. These measures are aimed at proactively preventing any potential untoward incidents that may arise during this period of heightened sensitivity.
