Assam: Cachar Police Foil Major Ganja Smuggling Attempt, Seize Rs 3 Crore Worth of Contraband
Guwahati: In a major crackdown on interstate drug trafficking, Cachar Police seized over 576 kilograms of suspected ganja during an early morning operation near the ISBT area of Silchar on June 24. The operation, executed on the Silchar Bypass under the jurisdiction of Silchar Police Station, was based on precise intelligence inputs.
Police intercepted two vehicles — a Bolero and a Verna — both reportedly entering Assam from Tripura. The vehicles were thoroughly searched, leading to the recovery of 86 tightly packed bundles of ganja, weighing a total of 576.58 kilograms. The contraband, confirmed using a drug detection kit, is estimated to be worth around ₹3 crore in the illegal drug market.
Three individuals, all hailing from West Tripura, were detained on the spot and remain in custody. According to preliminary investigation, the consignment originated from Dharmanagar, Tripura, and was being smuggled into Assam for further distribution.
The seizure was made in the presence of independent witnesses, ensuring transparency and legal compliance in the process. Police have launched a detailed probe to trace the broader network behind the smuggling attempt, aiming to identify both the source and the intended recipients of the massive drug haul.
Authorities have reiterated their zero-tolerance stance against drug trafficking and assured continued vigilance along known smuggling routes in the region.
