Assam: Cachar Police Nets Two More in Pro-Pakistan Social Media Crackdown, Total Arrests Reach Eleven
Guwahati, Assam – The dragnet cast by Cachar Police in Assam has widened, with the apprehension of two additional individuals for disseminating content supportive of Pakistan on social media platforms. This latest action brings the total number of arrests made in connection with the ongoing crackdown to eleven.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to his official X handle to confirm the fresh arrests. He identified the two individuals as Baktar Hussain Barbhuiya, a resident of Ramnagar under the jurisdiction of Sonai Police Station, and Md. Imran Hussain Borbhuiya, hailing from Malugram Ganiwala within the Silchar Police Station area.
In a stern warning, Chief Minister Sarma also indicated the potential invocation of the stringent National Security Act (NSA) against those found to be engaging in such activities, should the situation warrant it.
Speaking to the press at the state BJP office, Chief Minister Sarma unequivocally stated, “There are no similarities between Bharat and Pakistan. The two countries are enemy nations and we must remain like that.” His remarks underscore the state government’s firm stance against any expression of support for the neighboring nation.
Prior to these latest arrests, law enforcement had already detained one more individual on the night of April 25 for allegedly espousing pro-Pakistan sentiments online.
These arrests are part of a sustained effort by the Assam Police to address and counter any display of sympathy or endorsement for Pakistan, particularly in the aftermath of recent events. The individuals previously apprehended include Md. Jabir Hussain from Hailakandi, Md. A.K. Bahauddin and Md. Javed Mazumder from Silchar, Md. Mahahar Mia @ Md. Mujihirul Islam from Morigaon, Md. Aminul Islam from Nagaon, Md. Sahil Ali from Sivasagar, Md. Jarif Ali from Barpeta, Anil Bania (the District Secretary of the Satra Mukti Sangram Parishad) from Biswanath, and Md. Mustak Ahmed @ Sahel from Karimganj.
