Assam: Chaos at Rongali Bihu Fest in Bajali as On-Stage Altercation Disrupts Cultural Celebrations

Guwahati: What began as a festive celebration of Assam’s cultural heritage turned into an evening of turmoil during the Rongali Bihu event at Choukhuti in Bajali district, as a heated altercation unfolded on stage between a performer and an organizing member.

Eyewitnesses reported that popular vocalist Dhanoti Das was at the center of the chaos, allegedly clashing with a member of the Choukhuti Bhatri Sangha—the group responsible for organizing the annual Bihu event. The confrontation reportedly stemmed from the artist’s failure to perform at the scheduled time, leading to mounting frustration and a verbal exchange that spiraled out of control.

As tensions flared, musical instruments were thrown off the stage, bringing the event to a sudden halt and causing panic among the gathered crowd.

Though the organizing committee has yet to release an official statement, unconfirmed allegations have surfaced suggesting possible alcohol consumption by the artist prior to the incident—raising further concerns about conduct and professionalism at public cultural events.

The incident has drawn widespread criticism from local residents and cultural enthusiasts alike, who have expressed deep disappointment over the disruption. Many have labeled the behavior disrespectful to the essence of Bihu and called for greater accountability and decorum in future celebrations.
