Assam: Cheragi Forest Encroachers Served Eviction Notices

Sribhumi – The Forest Department has stepped up its efforts to reclaim encroached land in the Cheragi reserved forest area, issuing formal eviction notices to illegal occupants. The department has given residents one month to vacate the premises, warning of legal action and demolition of structures if they fail to comply.

The official notice explicitly states that the occupants have illegally trespassed into protected forest land, constructed houses, and engaged in cultivation, causing significant environmental damage to the reserved forest. The department is serious about protecting its green cover and has reiterated its commitment to preserving the natural habitat.

“You are hereby informed that you have illegally trespassed into a reserved forest area, occupied forest land, constructed houses, and carried out cultivation, thereby causing damage to the reserved forest,” the notice reads, leaving no room for ambiguity.

Failure to adhere to the directive will lead to legal proceedings under Section 72(c) of the Assam Forest Regulation, a stringent measure against unauthorized occupation and misuse of forest land. This move underscores the department’s resolve to enforce forest protection laws. Local residents, having received the notices, now have a month to vacate the land voluntarily and avoid punitive action.
