Assam Chief Minister Announces Major Educational Initiatives

Guwahati, 23rd June: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently announced significant advancements in the state’s education sector via a series of tweets on X. Emphasizing his administration’s commitment to educational excellence, Sarma detailed plans for the comprehensive upgrade of school infrastructure and the establishment of new educational institutions aimed at skill development and advanced learning.

Sarma revealed ambitious plans to upgrade 500 schools across Assam, each receiving an investment of Rs 8 crore. “In pursuit of educational excellence! Over the last few days, I have been engaging with stakeholders to ensure that our plans to revolutionize the education sector are on the right track, which will help lakhs of students in the State,” he tweeted. This initiative represents the highest-ever allocation for school infrastructure development in Assam, aiming to provide state-of-the-art facilities and a conducive learning environment.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the progress of Assam Skill University, currently under construction in Mangaldai. This institution is set to align education with industry demands, offering courses in cutting-edge fields such as AI, Data Science, and Financial Services. Sarma expressed optimism about the university’s future, noting that academic activities are expected to commence by July 2025.

Sarma’s tour included an inspection of the ongoing construction of Darrang Medical College. Once completed, the college will add 100 MBBS seats, thereby enhancing healthcare services and ensuring quality medical education and treatment for the state’s citizens.

During his visit to Gohpur, Sarma reviewed the development plans for Swahid Kanaklata University, which aims to prepare students for Industry 4.0 requirements. The university will incorporate studies on notable personalities like Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala and Swahid Kanaklata Barua into its curriculum. Addressing the media, Sarma reiterated the state’s commitment to the project and the welfare of tea garden workers. “Today we met the tea garden workers and their unions and had a meeting with them about their well-being and safety. We have identified the land that will be allotted for the university,” he said.

Sarma outlined the next steps for the university’s construction, which will be built on 600 bighas of land within the tea garden area. Engineers will inspect the land, and a follow-up meeting with the tea garden workers’ union is scheduled in Guwahati. Sarma anticipates that if approvals are secured promptly, construction could begin by December 2024.

These initiatives underscore the Assam government’s dedication to enhancing educational infrastructure, skill development, and healthcare education, paving the way for a brighter future for the state’s youth.
