Assam Chief Minister Commends Prime Minister Modi on ULFA Agreement
Guwahati, 30th December: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 29 during the historic memorandum ceremony for the tripartite agreement involving the government and the ULFA pro-talks faction. In his address, CM Sarma highlighted that since Modi assumed office in 2014, more than 8200 cadres of militant organizations have surrendered in Assam.
The agreement, witnessed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, signifies collaborative efforts to achieve an insurgency-free Northeast, aligning with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of peace, prosperity, and comprehensive development for Assam and neighboring states.
The significant number of cadres surrendering indicates the success of government policies aimed at resolving long-standing conflicts in the region. The Ministry of Home Affairs, under Prime Minister Modi’s guidance, has played a crucial role in signing nine peace and border-related agreements in the Northeast over the past five years, contributing to the establishment of peace across a substantial part of the region.
The substantial reduction in violent incidents, deaths, and kidnappings by 87 percent, 90 percent, and 84 percent, respectively, since 2014 underscores the effectiveness of these peace initiatives. The ULFA agreement includes provisions for disarming, disbanding their armed organization, vacating occupied camps, engaging in peaceful democratic processes, and upholding the country’s integrity.
This milestone reflects a broader vision for an insurgency-free Northeast, marking the beginning of a new era of peace for not only Assam but the entire region. It fulfills a key aspect of the Modi government’s commitment to national security and regional development.
