Assam Chief Minister Credits Crackdown on Drunk Driving for 15% Decline in Road Accidents

Assam: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has attributed the state’s success in reducing road mishaps to a stringent crackdown on drunk driving.

In a review meeting on road safety, CM Sarma highlighted that rigorous enforcement of the “No Drink and Drive” rule, combined with heightened checks in Guwahati after 10 PM, has played a significant role in improving road safety across the state.

To maintain this momentum, CM Sarma announced that intensified road safety measures and monitoring will continue through the Magh Bihu festivities. The Excise Department has been tasked with exploring dynamic seasonal timings for bars to regulate late-night activities and further curb the risks associated with drinking and driving.

Recognizing the rising number of road incidents in specific areas, the government is fast-tracking infrastructure improvements, including the installation of streetlights, foot overbridges, and reflective patches along the Guwahati Bypass. The Public Works Department (PWD) is also incorporating advanced safety features such as speed breakers, crash barriers, and fluorescent signage into its road construction projects to enhance safety.

To further improve visibility, district police have been instructed to ensure reflective patches are installed on the rear sides of commercial vehicles, particularly in border districts. Additionally, police and district administrations are set to launch extensive road safety awareness campaigns across social media platforms to engage the public and promote safe driving practices.

In a bid to enhance road safety comprehensively, the state is rolling out a vision testing initiative for commercial drivers. Drivers identified with vision impairments will receive corrective measures and treatment, ensuring safer driving conditions on the roads.
