Assam Chief Minister Demands Resignation of Jharkhand CM, Criticizes Handling of Protests
Guwahati, August 26, 2024: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has called for the resignation of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, accusing him of failing to fulfill promises made during the 2019 assembly elections. Sarma criticized the Jharkhand government for its alleged inefficacy, particularly in addressing illegal infiltration and handling recent protests.
Sarma remarked that the Jharkhand government had “utterly failed on all fronts,” emphasizing the government’s inability to regulate illegal activities. He specifically pointed out the failure to meet promises made to the state’s youth and criticized Soren’s leadership.
The Chief Minister also condemned the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led alliance’s response to a recent Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) march in Ranchi. Sarma expressed outrage over the police’s use of tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters. He denounced the police actions as an unprecedented level of repression, comparing it unfavorably to his experiences with militant groups like ULFA.
Sarma has called for the removal of Jharkhand’s Director General of Police (DGP), alleging that under his administration, free and fair elections are unattainable. He challenged the DGP to reveal the identities of the 12,000 individuals booked under non-bailable sections during the protest, warning of legal action if the information is not disclosed.
With Jharkhand’s assembly elections approaching at the end of the year, Sarma vowed to continue advocating for democratic rights and proper protest management, asserting that such actions are vital to safeguarding the state’s democratic processes.
