Assam Chief Minister Highlights Drug Trafficking Concerns, Urges Vigilance in Politics
Guwahati, 3rd October: In a pressing address at a public rally, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma underscored the escalating threat of drug trafficking in the country, particularly pointing to the alarming frequency of narcotics recoveries in Assam. His remarks came during an event in Haryana, where he highlighted the ongoing challenges posed by illegal substances.
Sarma revealed that during interrogations of drug suspects, many disclose plans to transport narcotics, including heroin and cannabis, to northern states like Punjab and Haryana. “Every day, we recover heroin, ganja, or other illegal substances,” he stated. He went on to add that suspects often reveal their connections to these trafficking networks, hinting at more extensive operations behind the scenes. “You all know who these individuals are,” Sarma remarked, suggesting a deeper understanding of the problem among the public.
The Chief Minister reiterated the Assam government’s unwavering commitment to tackling the drug trade, reporting that over the past three and a half years, more than 200 individuals involved in drug-related crimes have been apprehended or neutralized by the state police. This proactive approach reflects the government’s determination to combat the growing menace.
In a strong call to action, Sarma urged the public to stay vigilant and expressed his concerns about the potential infiltration of drug-related individuals into politics. “I request you all, whoever has any relation with such things, we should never allow them to come into politics,” he concluded, reinforcing his commitment to ensuring that criminals do not hold positions of power in governance.
Through these remarks, CM Sarma aims to raise awareness of the drug trafficking issue while rallying support for stringent measures to protect the integrity of political systems in Assam and beyond.
