Assam Chief Minister Highlights Progress Under PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

Guwahati, July 23: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced today that under the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a total solar capacity of 1,073 kW has been successfully installed across 311 households in Assam.

The initiative, supported by the Interim Budget 2024 and Union Budget 2024, aims to expand rapidly, with many more households expected to benefit from this scheme. Launched in February by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is designed to promote solar energy and sustainable development by providing up to 300 units of free electricity per month to one crore households. The ambitious scheme is backed by an investment exceeding Rs 75,000 crore.

To ensure affordability, the government plans to offer significant subsidies directly to bank accounts and provide concessional bank loans. Prime Minister Modi has assured that there will be no cost burden on citizens. The initiative will be facilitated through a National Online Portal, aiming to streamline the process and integrate all stakeholders.

Urban local bodies and panchayats will also receive incentives for promoting rooftop solar systems, contributing to increased income, reduced power bills, and job creation. The Prime Minister has encouraged residential consumers, particularly youth, to apply for the scheme via the official portal: PM Surya Ghar Portal.
