Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Commends Joint Efforts for Peace, Aims to Withdraw AFSPA by End of 2023
Guwahati, 26th December: In a significant development, Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, commended the joint efforts of the Centre and State governments to bring peace and prosperity to the region. The government aims to completely withdraw AFSPA from the state by the end of 2023, as part of a comprehensive strategy to integrate former militants into mainstream society. Under CM Sarma’s leadership, four peace accords have been successfully signed with insurgent groups, including a tripartite agreement on April 28, 2023, with the DNLA/DPSC, marking the end of insurgency in Dima Hasao district. This historic event, witnessed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, signifies the conclusion of armed tribal militancy in Assam.
As a result of these peace initiatives, approximately 8,756 ex-cadres have been rehabilitated over the last two years, with an investment exceeding Rs 300 crore in rehabilitation programs. These efforts aim to provide sustainable livelihoods and assimilate former militants into civilian life, contributing positively to society. Notably, Assam has achieved zero loss of lives due to extremist violence, showcasing the effectiveness of the government’s approach and highlighting the state’s transition towards stability and growth. This achievement signals a promising future for all residents of Assam.
