Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Condoles Train Collision Tragedy in West Bengal

Guwahati, 17th June: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed deep condolences following the tragic collision between the Kanchenjunga Express and a goods train near New Jalpaiguri on June 17 morning. The incident resulted in the loss of at least five lives, including the driver of the goods train, and left around 30 others injured.

In a message shared on social media, Sarma conveyed his sympathies, stating, “The tragic train collision between the Kanchenjunga Express and a Goods train is extremely unfortunate. My heart goes out to the families of those who have lost their lives, and prayers for the swift recovery of the injured.”

The collision occurred around 9 am in the Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district. The Sealdah-bound Kanchanjungha Express (Train No. 13174), which had departed from Agartala, was struck by the goods-laden train, causing significant damage to three coaches of the passenger train, which derailed as a result.

Chief Minister Sarma assured that the situation is under close monitoring, and the Assam state government stands ready to provide all necessary assistance required in the aftermath of this tragic incident.
