Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Secures Positive Response for Proposed Defence Corridor

Guwahati, 26th July: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on July 26 that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has responded positively to the state’s proposal for establishing India’s third Defence Corridor. Sarma conveyed this development following his meeting with Singh during a recent visit to New Delhi.

Sarma emphasized that the proposal envisions transforming Assam into a significant hub for defence production, building on the state’s emerging role as a semiconductor unit. “Our discussions focused on how Assam can leverage its competitive advantages to become a major centre for defence manufacturing,” Sarma said during a press conference.

The meeting, held on July 23, also explored the possibility of hosting a Defence Conclave in Assam, aimed at attracting investors and showcasing the state’s potential in the sector. Sarma described the talks as “very positive” and highlighted the state’s commitment to enhancing its role in India’s defence industry.

The proposed Defence Corridor is expected to stimulate local manufacturing, generate employment, and support India’s strategic goals for self-reliance in military equipment production. If realized, it will position Assam as a key player in the nation’s defence sector.
