Assam Chief Minister Orders Installation of Prepaid Meters in Government Quarters
Guwahati, 11th February: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken proactive steps to address the issue of nominal deductions from the salaries of ministers and senior officers for monthly power bills. Instructing the power department to install individual prepaid meters in every government quarter, including residences in the ministerial colony, CM Sarma aims to ensure that no subsidized power is availed by government officials.
In a statement on platform X, CM Sarma highlighted the initiative, revealing that during recent interactions with officials from the Power Department, he became aware of the nominal deductions from ministers’ and senior officers’ salaries for electricity bills. In response, he promptly directed the department to expedite the installation of prepaid meters to ensure transparency and accountability in power consumption.
“This measure aims to ensure that no subsidized power is enjoyed by ministers, officers, or government employees,” wrote CM Sarma, emphasizing the government’s commitment to fair and equitable distribution of resources.
The decision was formalized during the Assam state cabinet meeting held on January 12, reflecting the government’s determination to accelerate the installation of smart prepaid meters across government premises. This proactive approach underscores the government’s dedication to promoting efficiency and accountability in governance.
