Assam Chief Minister Sets Conditions for Support to Jharkhand Mukti Morcha Leader Hemant Soren

Guwahati, August 26, 2024: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued a decisive statement on the political situation in Jharkhand, underscoring the significance of national unity and security. Sarma outlined specific conditions for his support of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Hemant Soren, who is currently in Delhi.

Sarma remarked, “Champai Soren has three paths ahead of him, and we are open to discussions. We will monitor developments in the coming days.” He specified that Sarma’s support would depend on Soren meeting several conditions: creating 500,000 jobs by September, opposing illegal infiltrators, and addressing alleged mistreatment of Hindus during Muharram.

“Our priority is the nation,” Sarma asserted. “If Hemant Soren fulfills these conditions, we will support him. The JMM should back us in return, and we will stand together to expel infiltrators from Jharkhand.”

Recent press interactions have hinted that Champai Soren may be considering the formation of a new political party. However, despite these suggestions, Soren has not resigned from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha or relinquished his ministerial roles within the state government led by Hemant Soren.

Speculation about Soren’s future political moves has been rife. The 68-year-old leader, known for his tenure as Jharkhand’s Chief Minister from February to July 2024, during which Hemant Soren faced detention by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on money laundering charges, continues to be a significant figure in Jharkhand politics. Soren has maintained a strong presence in the legislative assembly, having secured his seat in every election since 2005.
