Assam Chief Minister Vows to Prevent ‘Miya’ Muslims from Taking Over the State

Guwahati, 27th August: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on August 27 made a contentious declaration in the state assembly, asserting that he would not permit ‘Miya’ Muslims to dominate Assam. His comments were made in response to opposition parties’ concerns regarding the state’s law and order situation, particularly following the rape of a 14-year-old girl in Nagaon on August 22.

During the session, Sarma countered the opposition’s arguments about demographic changes in the state, specifically addressing remarks by Jania Assembly constituency MLA Rafiqul Islam and opposition leader Debabrata Saikia. “Why should people from lower Assam relocate to Upper Assam? Does this imply that ‘Miya’ Muslims will rule the entire state?” Sarma questioned.

He firmly stated, “I will not allow Assam to become a land of Miyas. We will never allow it,” underscoring his stance against perceived demographic shifts. Sarma’s remarks have sparked controversy and debate regarding the intersection of ethnicity, migration, and political rhetoric in Assam.
