Assam: Chirang Police Arrest Man for Wildlife Trafficking, Seize Tiger Teeth and Deer Antlers

Guwahati, 3rd October: In a significant blow to wildlife smuggling in Assam, police have made two major arrests in separate operations. Taijuddin Sheikh, 34, was arrested in Ballimari for allegedly selling illegal wildlife body parts, including two tiger teeth and a set of deer antlers . This operation highlights the ongoing issue of wildlife smuggling in the region.

In another operation, Hanif Ali, a suspected rhino poacher, was arrested in Sonitpur district. Various animal body parts, including a rhino horn, were recovered. The arrest was made possible by a joint effort between the Assam Forest Department, Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), and local police.

The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau plays a crucial role in combating organized wildlife crimes in India. Established in 2008, the WCCB works to collect data, build infrastructure, and counsel customs administration to decrease wildlife crimes.

Police officials are urging the public to report any suspicious activities related to wildlife trade to help preserve the region’s natural heritage. The public’s support is vital in combating wildlife smuggling and protecting endangered species.

The illegal wildlife trade poses a serious threat to endangered species and biodiversity. Pangolins, for example, are hunted for their meat and scales, making them the most trafficked wildlife globally.
