Assam CM Advocates for People-Centric Police Stations and Role of Nagarik Samitis

Guwahati, 7th September: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has called for transforming police stations into more people-centric institutions, highlighting the decreased militancy-related incidents in the state. Speaking at the first state-level conclave of ‘Nagarik Samitis’ from all 307 police stations, Sarma stressed the importance of these citizen committees in enhancing public service and easing police stress.

Sarma noted that while insurgency in Assam has not been completely eradicated, its frequency has reduced significantly. He emphasized that police stations should now focus on better community engagement and service delivery. The role of Nagarik Samitis, he explained, will be crucial in maintaining positive relations between the police and the public, aiding in civil work, and improving service efficiency.

The Chief Minister outlined that policing involves both criminal justice administration and public service, with the samitis primarily responsible for the latter. They will assist with various duties such as issuing certificates, and facilitating permissions for events, aiming to foster better interaction between the public and police.

Sarma also highlighted ongoing improvements in the police system, including the prompt filing of chargesheets and enhancements to the forensic science wing. The new Nagarik Samitis, starting in October, will consist of 12 members each and are expected to bridge the gap between the community and the police.
