Assam CM Announces Dedicated Shelter Home for Transgender Community

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has unveiled plans to establish a dedicated shelter home in Guwahati, aimed at providing a safe and supportive environment for the transgender community. This initiative, introduced during the Assam budget session, reflects the state government’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and addressing the challenges faced by transgender individuals.

The shelter home seeks to offer a secure and welcoming space for transgender individuals, ensuring access to essential resources and a place to stay with dignity. This move marks a significant step towards greater social acceptance and equality, aligning with the government’s broader efforts to support the transgender community.

In a statement on his official X handle, Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the government’s commitment to inclusivity, declaring, “Our Govt is ringing in a new era of inclusivity.” This initiative is part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to promote social welfare and equality.

Notably, the state government has also allocated Rs 100 crore as a one-time grant for Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, facilitating advanced research, modern preservation techniques, and enhanced documentation efforts.
