Assam CM Announces Expanded Protections for Indigenous Communities, Introduces New Measures Beyond Clause 6
Guwahati, August 30, 2024 — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has unveiled a comprehensive plan to bolster the protection of the state’s indigenous communities, taking steps that go beyond the provisions of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. The new measures will focus on the establishment and safeguarding of Tribal Belt & Block, Micro Tribal Belt & Block, and Heritage Belt & Block across Assam.
In his announcement, CM Sarma emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to securing the rights and lands of Adivasis and Dalits in the state. “We are dedicated to not only implementing but expanding the provisions of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord to ensure the security and preservation of our indigenous people,” Sarma stated.
The Chief Minister revealed that new legislation would soon be introduced to further secure land rights for Adivasis and Dalits, reinforcing the state’s pledge to protect these communities. This legislative move is aimed at addressing long-standing issues and enhancing the socio-economic stability of Assam’s indigenous populations.
