Assam CM Announces Ministry Reshuffle Ahead of 2026 Assembly Elections

Guwahati, 7th June: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has revealed plans to reshuffle his ministry by August 15, incorporating at least three new faces to form a rejuvenated team for the 2026 assembly elections. Speaking at a press conference, Sarma highlighted the need for a refreshed cabinet to energize preparations for the upcoming elections.

Sarma indicated that while no formal discussions have taken place with the central leadership yet, he intends to initiate the reshuffle process after the current flood situation in the state stabilizes. “We will change our ministry and give it a new look. We need to prepare the team for the 2026 elections that will work with new energy,” he stated.

The chief minister mentioned that the reshuffle would start a month after the flood situation is addressed, aiming for a new ministry by mid-August. He also confirmed that at least three new members would be inducted into the cabinet, noting that there are currently two vacant positions. Additionally, the position held by Parimal Suklabaidya, who won the Lok Sabha polls, will also be vacant.

“Assam Excise, Transport and Fisheries Minister Parimal Suklabaidya won from Silchar by a margin of 2,64,311 votes,” Sarma noted, underscoring the need to fill this vacancy.

Sarma assured that not all current ministers would be replaced, but departmental reshuffles are likely. This strategic move is seen as an effort to bolster the government’s performance and readiness for the forthcoming elections.
