Assam CM Backs Modi’s Push for Swift Justice in Crimes Against Women

Guwahati, August 26, 2024: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has voiced strong support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for stricter laws to tackle rising crimes against women. In a press briefing at Union Minister Sanjay Seth’s residence in Ranchi, Sarma underscored the urgency of expediting the legal process, proposing that all stages—from inquiry to conviction—should be completed within six months for cases involving crimes against women.

Sarma highlighted the increasing frequency of such crimes, stating, “Crimes against women are on the rise. I welcome the PM’s announcement that a strict law is needed.” He emphasized that a six-month deadline for legal proceedings is essential to effectively combat these offenses and ensure timely justice.

This endorsement follows a recent high-profile case involving the rape and murder of a doctor at R G Kar Hospital in Kolkata, which has sparked national outrage. Sarma has committed to presenting these recommendations to the central government to influence the formulation of new legislation.

On another front, Sarma discussed the potential political impact of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He expressed support for Soren’s possible inclusion, suggesting it would strengthen the BJP’s position in Jharkhand. Sarma plans to further explore this opportunity during his upcoming visit to Delhi.

Prime Minister Modi, during a recent address in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, condemned crimes against women as “unpardonable sins” and reaffirmed that ensuring the safety of women remains a top national priority.
