Assam CM: CAA Holds Little Significance in State
Guwahati, 14th March: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asserted on Thursday that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) holds minimal significance in Assam, anticipating the state to witness the lowest number of applications for Indian citizenship under the act.
During a press conference, Sarma highlighted that Assam is expected to have the fewest applications on the newly launched portal by the Ministry of Home Affairs for eligible individuals to apply for citizenship under the CAA 2019.
The Union government rolled out the CAA on Monday, unveiling regulations aimed at expediting citizenship for undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who entered India before December 31, 2014.
Sarma clarified that the act specifies the deadline for citizenship application as December 31, 2014. In Assam, post the National Register of Citizens update, only individuals who applied but did not find their names in the list will be eligible to apply for CAA.
Furthermore, the CM expressed confidence in the BJP securing 13 out of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam. He also forecasted a third term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi following the Lok Sabha elections.
