Assam CM Commends GMDA’s Dedicated Efforts to Restore Guwahati’s Water Bodies
Guwahati, 28th December: Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has lauded the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) for its relentless commitment to preserving and rejuvenating crucial water bodies in Guwahati. A special focus has been placed on Silsako Beel, where extensive conservation activities are underway. The GMDA’s proactive involvement in restoring this significant urban water body, essential for managing stormwater runoff from nearby hills, has garnered appreciation.
The initiative to preserve water bodies like Silsako Beel extends beyond flood control. It strives to connect people with nature, fostering understanding and respect for the environment while safeguarding the diverse habitats of aquatic life. Rooted in the Guwahati Water Bodies (Preservation and Conservation) Act, enacted in 2008 and amended in 2010, this broader effort targets the protection of three identified wetlands—Deepor, Silsako, and Borsola-Sorusola, due to their role in flood control and as havens for migratory birds and local wildlife.
The GMDA’s comprehensive work encompasses the desilting and cleaning of the Pamohi Channel leading to Deepor Beel. Addressing issues with the NH37 drain is also a key part of the initial restoration phase. This phase is vital to maintaining ecological balance, averting encroachment, and preventing landfilling threats to these water bodies.
Beyond environmental advantages, these restoration projects hold a human dimension. CM Sarma has assured the rehabilitation of households settled in Silsako before the enactment of Guwahati’s preservation legislation. This underscores the government’s commitment to ecological preservation and social responsibility.
The GMDA’s website serves as a hub of information on their initiatives, including the Water Bodies Restoration project. This forms part of a holistic plan to mitigate flooding and enhance the quality of life for Guwahati’s residents. With the latest update on December 27th, 2023, the site offers insights into various services and policies related to the project, emphasizing the significance of conservation efforts.
CM Sarma’s recognition of these preservation endeavors showcases the Assam government’s dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. The ongoing restoration of water bodies, prominently Silsako Beel, stands as a testament to the state’s proactive approach in managing natural resources and protecting its rich biodiversity.
