Assam CM convenes meeting for overhaul of key roadways connecting Bhutan

Guwahati, 16th November: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led a meeting with Public Works Department (PWD) officials and other concerned authorities to assess the condition of highways linking Assam and Bhutan. The primary objective is to enhance connectivity and trade between the two regions.

Emphasizing the pivotal role of well-maintained roads in promoting tourism and economic growth, Chief Minister Sarma issued directives for the repair and upkeep of these highways. The move aligns with the broader vision of fostering seamless travel and trade between Assam and Bhutan.

This initiative follows the announcement by External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar in August 2023 about discussions between the Indian and Bhutanese governments regarding a rail link between Bhutan and Assam. The proposed railway connection, expected to be completed by 2026, aims to enhance connectivity and tourism between the two regions.

The Assam government’s commitment to road maintenance and the upcoming rail link underscores the collaborative efforts to bolster ties and infrastructure between Assam and Bhutan.
