Assam CM Criticizes Political Parties for Tokenism with Muslim Community

Guwahati, 4th November: Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has criticized the Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) for allegedly exploiting the Muslim community for political gain.

Sarma contends that both parties have taken the votes of Muslims in Assam for granted, with little regard for their welfare beyond election time.

According to Sarma, Muslims in Assam often voted for the Congress and AIUDF out of fear, but the relationship between these parties and the Muslim community was purely transactional. Post-election, the parties failed to address the concerns and needs of the Muslim population.

In contrast, Sarma’s BJP-led government has taken on the responsibility of improving the lives of indigenous Muslims in the state. They have initiated measures to combat issues like child marriages and address concerns related to madrassa education. Sarma also noted that they are providing free services and support for non-indigenous Muslims.

Despite the expectation that they might not receive votes from the rest of the Muslim population, the state government continues to offer welfare programs such as Orunodoi (a financial assistance scheme), health cards, and other benefits. Sarma emphasized that the government is committed to working for the betterment of all communities in Assam, regardless of electoral considerations.
