Assam CM Directs Measures to Ensure Peace Amidst Manipur’s Jiribam Unrest

Guwahati, 22nd June: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently chaired a crucial video conference with Cachar Deputy Commissioner and District Superintendent of Police to address the escalating violence in Manipur’s Jiribam district. The meeting was convened following disturbing reports of armed miscreants setting fire to a police check post in Leingangpokpi and subsequent retaliatory actions.

During the conference, CM Sarma emphasized the paramount importance of maintaining peace and tranquility in Cachar. He directed officials to ensure the swift delivery of humanitarian aid to individuals seeking refuge in the district amidst the unrest in neighboring Manipur.

The violent incidents in Jiribam, including the tragic beheading of Soibam Saratkumar Singh and subsequent arson attacks on houses, police outposts, and forest beats, have caused widespread fear and displacement among the Meitei community. Over 200 individuals have been relocated to a newly established relief camp to ensure their safety.

In response to these developments, Assam authorities are coordinating closely with Manipur officials to restore normalcy and provide necessary support to affected communities. CM Sarma reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the security and well-being of residents in the region, pledging proactive measures to address the ongoing challenges.

The video conference concluded with directives to maintain heightened vigilance and ensure effective coordination between law enforcement agencies to prevent further escalation of violence and facilitate peaceful resolution in the affected areas.
