Assam CM dismisses Manipur violence impact, calls for unity within diversity

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has downplayed concerns about the potential spillover of the ongoing violence in Manipur into other Northeastern states, particularly Assam.

Speaking at the International Tourism Mart in Kaziranga on Tuesday, Sarma emphasized the distinct identities of each state in the region, drawing a parallel to the relationship between Rajasthan and Haryana. “While we share a cultural bond, we are individual states,” he asserted.

He further clarified that incidents in Manipur, located about 500 kilometers away, should not be linked to events in Assam or other Northeastern states. “To link an incident in Manipur with Kaziranga or Manas is unfair. It only leads to frustration,” Sarma said.

The Chief Minister stressed the importance of maintaining peace and harmony within the region, highlighting the emotional and cultural connections between the states while acknowledging their geographical differences.

Meanwhile, the situation in Manipur remains tense, with security forces conducting extensive search and combing operations to apprehend those responsible for the recent spate of violence, including the tragic killing of women and children in Jiribam. Additional Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel have been deployed to the region to bolster security efforts.
