Assam CM Emphasizes Self-Reliance in Education at State Open University

Guwahati, 6th February: During his address at Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma underlined the importance of self-reliance in education, advocating for universities to adopt self-financing models to reduce dependence on government funds and effectively navigate challenges.

Sarma stressed the significance of financial stability in education, citing external factors like natural calamities that can impact government finances and limit their ability to fully support educational initiatives. He emphasized the need for universities to stand on their own financially to ensure continuity and quality in higher education.

“Higer education is as indispensable as standing on one’s own feet,” remarked Sarma, advocating for a shift in financing patterns of universities. He praised Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University for its success in self-financing, presenting it as a model for others to emulate.

The Chief Minister outlined plans to introduce scholarship programs covering 100% to 50% of educational expenses, aiming to ensure equitable access to education, particularly for lower-income groups. He emphasized the importance of allocating limited national resources effectively, targeting assistance towards those most in need.
