Assam CM Faces Legal Heat as FIR Filed by MP over ‘Miya’ Controversy

Guwahati, 15th July: In a recent development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma finds himself entangled in a growing controversy following his remarks on the Miya community. As another First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged against him at Dispur Police Station by Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, demands for his arrest have intensified.

MP Bhuyan accused the chief minister of joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to spread hatred among communities.

He said, “The chief minister has targeted a particular community. There is a stringent law in Supreme Court against those making communal remarks.”

Expressing his strong disapproval, Bhuyan questioned the authority of Himanta Biswa Sarma to make such comments targeting a specific community. He further criticized the chief minister, asking, “Who gave the right to Himanta Biswa Sarma to make a communal comment on the Miya community?”

Earlier today, the Asom Sankhayalaghu Sangram Parishad lodged a FIR against the chief minister at Nagaon Sadar police station. The complaint cited his controversial remarks, including the usage of the term ‘Miya Assamese’ and insensitive comments regarding the dietary habits of different communities.

The Parishad also highlighted an alleged connection between the chief minister and Badruddin Ajmal, raising questions about the motives behind Sarma’s statements. Critics argue that the chief minister’s remarks undermine social harmony and promote division among communities.

In response to these developments, the Asom Sankhayalaghu Sangram Parishad has pledged to launch a robust mass movement in support of unity and inclusivity, vowing to protect the Miya community from any threats of expulsion.

The controversy surrounding the chief minister’s remarks has sparked a heated debate within the state, with concerns over the potential repercussions on social cohesion and harmony. As the situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how these developments will impact the political landscape of Assam.
