Assam CM Hails New Criminal Codes, Marks End of Colonial Laws

Guwahati, 1st July: With the enforcement of three new criminal codes today (July 1), Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma heralded a transformative shift in India’s legal landscape. These new laws replace the British-era statutes, including the Indian Penal Code, signifying a move towards a more technologically advanced and citizen-focused justice system that prioritizes the safety of women, children, and the underprivileged.

“Today marks a watershed moment in Bharat’s criminal justice system. Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam have come into force, replacing 164-year-old colonial legislations,” Sarma stated in a post on X.

Sarma emphasized the extensive preparations undertaken by Team Assam over many months to ensure the effective implementation of these progressive laws. He called on various stakeholders, including police, civil servants, citizens, lawyers, civil society, and the judiciary, to collaborate closely for the successful enforcement of these laws.

“It is my sincere appeal to all stakeholders to join hands with us in realizing the foundational purpose of these laws,” Sarma urged.

The new legislation aims to streamline legal processes, enhance safety measures, and integrate technological advancements to facilitate efficient delivery of justice across Assam. These reforms are expected to significantly improve the state’s ability to address societal challenges and safeguard the rights of its citizens.
