Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Addresses Devastating Flood Situation, Pledges Relief Efforts

Guwahati, 3rd July: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the ongoing flood crisis in the state, attributing it to uncontrollable geographical factors, including a cloudburst in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh. Speaking to reporters after assessing the situation in Kamrup district, Sarma highlighted heavy rainfall in China, Bhutan, and Arunachal Pradesh as key contributors to the floods, emphasizing the state’s limited ability to mitigate such natural disasters.

Despite these challenges, Sarma assured residents that significant flood control measures have been implemented over the years, reducing the impact on communities. He pledged ongoing efforts to manage the aftermath effectively, including repairing damaged embankments and roads, and providing essential supplies like food and medical aid in relief camps.

During his visit, Sarma personally inspected flood-hit areas, including the Garal Bhattapara Gaonburah ghat and the Dharapur Jangrabari Sluice Gate over River Khana, demonstrating his commitment to overseeing relief operations firsthand. He highlighted plans to visit Majuli to address a breached embankment that has inundated large swathes of land, underscoring the government’s round-the-clock efforts to prevent further breaches.

Sarma expressed cautious optimism regarding improving weather conditions in some affected districts, suggesting that if rainfall continues to decrease, the situation could improve within a week. However, he cautioned that continuous heavy rainfall could exacerbate the crisis, requiring adaptive responses from authorities.

In concluding his remarks, Sarma praised the resilience of Assam’s people in facing adversity, emphasizing their collective determination to overcome the challenges posed by the floods. His proactive approach, including recent reviews in Golaghat district and Kaziranga National Park, underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding communities and wildlife amid natural calamities.
