Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Addresses Flood Crisis and Infrastructure Issues
Guwahati, 5th July: Amidst the severe flooding in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited and inspected areas affected by waterlogging due to relentless rainfall, noting an improvement in the situation.
In a press briefing, CM Sarma remarked that the floodwaters in Assam have significantly receded, bringing some relief to the affected regions. He acknowledged the ongoing issues faced by residents, particularly in areas where embankments have been breached, and assured that efforts are being made to assist those impacted.
In Dibrugarh, where residents have been without electricity for 5-6 days, the Chief Minister explained that the power outage was a deliberate safety measure due to widespread flooding. “The power can be restored in 2 minutes, but it has been cut off as there is water everywhere,” Sarma stated.
Addressing infrastructure challenges, CM Sarma highlighted that the drains in Dibrugarh are clogged due to encroachment and the inability to clean them with standard equipment. He noted that a significant amount of garbage has accumulated in the drains, exacerbating the problem. Discussions are ongoing to find ways to address the issue using smaller equipment. “Eviction is not appropriate during floods. We will see what to do after the water recedes,” he added.
The Assam government continues to monitor the situation closely, with plans to implement measures to mitigate the impact of future floods and improve infrastructure resilience.
