Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Congratulates BJP Candidates for Upcoming By-Elections
Guwahati– Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma extended his congratulations on Saturday to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates—Nihar Ranjan Das, Diganta Ghatowar, and Diplu Ranjan Sarma—who are set to contest the upcoming by-elections in the Dholai (SC), Behali, and Samaguri assembly constituencies, respectively. These bypolls, scheduled for November 13, 2024, hold significant importance for the party as it seeks to maintain and expand its influence in the state.
The BJP Central Election Committee announced the candidates in New Delhi on Saturday evening, marking a critical step in the party’s preparations for the by-elections. Nihar Ranjan Das will contest in Dholai, Diganta Ghatowar will run for Behali, and Diplu Ranjan Sarma will represent the BJP in Samaguri.
The by-elections, which also include constituencies such as Bongaigaon, Sidli, and Dholai, were necessitated by the election of sitting legislators to the Lok Sabha during the general elections held earlier this year. Key transitions include BJP’s Parimal Suklabaidya, who won the Cachar Lok Sabha seat, and Ranjit Dutta from Behali, who secured the Tezpur parliamentary seat.
Notable veteran AGP leader Phani Bhushan Choudhury, who has held the Bongaigaon constituency since 1985, won the Barpeta Lok Sabha seat, while UPPL’s Joyanta Basumatary, previously representing Sidli, emerged victorious in Kokrajhar. Additionally, Congress’s Rakibul Hussain, a five-time MLA from Samaguri, claimed a decisive victory in Dhubri.
Key dates for the by-elections include the last date for filing nominations on October 25, scrutiny on October 28, and the option to withdraw nominations by October 30. Vote counting is scheduled for November 23, making this a crucial electoral event for both the BJP and other political parties in Assam.
