Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Highlights Innovative Drug Trafficking Methods, Calls for Collective Action

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has raised concerns over the innovative methods employed by drug traffickers, including transporting narcotics on foot from Guwahati to Shillong, which poses significant challenges for law enforcement agencies.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Dikshant Parade of 70 DSP probationers at the North Eastern Police Academy (NEPA) in Shillong, Meghalaya, on March 28, Sarma explained the difficulties in detecting these methods. “If a person from Guwahati starts walking to Shillong with drugs in his pocket, it is very difficult to find out,” he remarked, emphasizing the discreet tactics used by traffickers.

Sarma further elaborated on the diverse trafficking models, where individuals travel with small quantities of drugs, making detection complex. “They have various models. They can even transport drugs by walking,” he noted, highlighting the adaptive strategies used by drug cartels.

Addressing the broader drug menace, Sarma acknowledged that state governments are making significant efforts to combat the issue but stressed the need for collective action. “If we keep on collectively attacking the drug cartels, we are going to win the war,” he asserted.

He also underlined the global nature of the drug crisis, pointing out that even countries like the United States struggle to combat drug trafficking. Sarma revealed the sophisticated methods employed by cartels, including the use of drones to transport narcotics and cross-border operations by kingpins.

“It is not as simple as going to a place, conducting a raid, and finishing it off. This is a long battle, and we have to continue it,” Sarma emphasized, signaling the prolonged fight against drug trafficking.

Reaffirming his government’s commitment to eradicating the drug trade, Sarma posted on X: “Drugs is a global menace, and governments worldwide are making strenuous efforts to tackle it. The Government of Assam remains dedicated to this cause and works in close collaboration with other states to dismantle drug networks.”

The Assam government continues to intensify its anti-drug operations, recognizing that only sustained and coordinated efforts can effectively dismantle these complex trafficking networks.
